IPL Skin Pigmentation, Freckles and Age/Sun spots

Age spots, sun spots, liver spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin ageing and over exposure to the sun or sunbeds. From the age of around 40 the skin is less able to regenerate following sun exposure and age spots start to appear. Generally these age spots pose no health risk, however they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance to the skin.

Freckling and age spots can be successfully lightened or removed with Intense Pulse Light (IPL). The light targets areas of excess pigment, safely and quickly breaking down the excess melanin, leaving the texture and colour of the skin natural and unchanged.  Treatment is suitable for you if you would like:

  • A more even skin tone
  • To reduce areas of excess freckling
  • To target specific age/sun spots

How does IPL work for Pigmentation?

The Intense Pulse Light System releases short pulses of filtered light which are readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin (brown pigment) found within freckles, sun spots or liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and eradicates the melanin-rich cells which are then absorbed by the body.

What does treatment feel like?

Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and a warm, tingling sensation not unlike sunburn can be experienced afterwards.

How will my skin look after treatment?

Following your IPL treatment, most people experience little more than slight reddening  around the treated area. The skin lesions may temporarily darken after treatment before they start to fade or ‘flake’ away.  This is a positive indication of a successful IPL treatment and no cause for concern. Paler pigment particles are filtered away through the lymphatic system in your body.

How many treatments are necessary?

Clients typically need between one and three sessions at an interval of four to six weeks, although the number of treatments required will depend on the type and size of the pigmented area.  The more sun damage you have, the more likely you are to need up to five treatments. Expect to see gradual clearing over time.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Most people are suitable for treatment except for very dark skinned or tanned clients.
